Self-Care Explorations Part I: Microlinks

Hello Cystas,

So although this year’s theme for me has been self-care, I’ll be honest, I have failed miserably all year to be honest. I literally have just been ripping and running and doing sooo much that I haven’t kept up on anything regularly with my upkeep (other than pedicures, fill-in, and eyebrow waxing).  Even spiritually, I have kind of slacked off. However, I decided that I would start my new year off early and begin slowly paying attention to everything M-E- a bit more.  One of those areas was regular hair maintenance and skin treatments.  Well first of all, I am team #Natural and its Winter, which leaves options to protective styles only.  Unfortunately, my hair has been taking a toll with all of the medication switches, my PCOS, and my stress….and has started to thin on out. As a result I didn’t want to do anything too braided.  Here is a picture below, where my hair was thriving a bit more…. (this whole fro isn’t mine but it is mostly mine LOL)

This look is from Shein and if you would like to purchase it for your winter get away trips to somewhere warm and inviting follow this link http://bit.ly/2AbnjCz and use code cys20 to enjoy 20% off on all full priced items valued of $59.00 dollars or higher, shameless sponsor plug I know lol. Anyway back to the reality, above my hair was bountiful and full of life…..and now… its pretty much lifeless.

I tried all sort of braids during the warmer months and the added tension made it worse, so while watching trash tv, aka reality television…..I saw that one of the housewives had microlinks, and I decided to research more. What are microlinks you may ask, well, microlinks are beats that link the hair to extensions without the need for braiding.  The benefit is that it looks natural, you can treat your real hair while having them in, and there is little to no tension on the scalp.  Now is you are one that doesn’t want to straighten your hair, then I suggest to find the kind of hair texture that is more kinky for extension use. Me, on the other hand, don’t mind because my hair retains moisture so much better when straightened and right now I needed everything on my scalp. Of course when researching the installation and pricing, most places seem insane and out of reach for my budget. It is also so new to the beauty scene that not many stylist even know how to do it, accept in Atlanta, the glamour capital for black women.

Fortunately, I was blessed enough to be directed to Lady, a gorgeous stylist in the DMV area that specializes in the process. Surprisingly, it was affordable for me and worth the process.  I was so nervous but she educated me really well and I couldn’t be more pleases with the results as I treat my hair and try to recover from all this craziness. So I decided to get half microlinks and half sewn in to slowly introduce myself to the process. Here are a few videos of the process and pics below of the finished results:

What I love is how natural it looks…..and even though I worried before, I actually am great at maintaining it without putting heat on my hair.  Follow her today on instagram @lady_did_it and book your appointment on style seat DMV at ladydiditbeauty.com.

Sincerely,
