Vitamin D Anyone?: The critical role Vitamin D plays in insulin resistance and PCOS

Well here we are again starting over….but this time it feels right?

What am I talking about? I’ve said this year was my Jesus year, the year of new beginnings but literally I never thought it would play out on my scalp. It had been years since my hair broke off or even thinned out. I was taking every hair vitamin and using all the oils but couldn’t understand what was going on, that was until I finally switched endocrinologists…

What I discovered is that my Vitamin D level was dangerously low…doesn’t sound like that big of a deal huh? Well if you suffer from any chronic illness or condition, Vitamin D plays a major role in your immunity and resistance against contracting colds and viruses. Additionally, Vitamin D plays a major role in the maintenance of asthma and other bronchial and conditions with the lungs. However, more importantly, Vitamin D plays a major role in relieving symptom in Insulin Resistant type PCOS sufferers.

For months in the gym I’m working out barely finishing a workout. Months upon months I’m experiencing male patterned hair growth and scalp hair thinning, thinking like “my symptoms shouldn’t be happening, I’m working out and taking all my diabetes medications”, yet all along the one thing my previous doctors overlooked is my deficiency of Vitamin D because they didn’t think it was that big of a deal to the normal patient. Yet when you have a PCOS patient that develops diabetes, Vitamin D is essential in aiding your cells in metabolizing sugar and assisting your insulin’s functionality. In addition with diabetes your blood pressure is impacted…and Vitamin D assists in stabilizing heart conditions…blood pressure…auto immunity…and successful pregnancy outcomes to name a few.

Without the adequate levels of Vitamin D, your insulin resistance exacerbated further intensifying your PCOS symptoms by mimicking hormonal imbalances in the form of testosterone. My endocrinologist looked me in the eyes and said this is why your hair was thinning and unfortunately many of us practice medicine but not many of us take up a passion for certain health issues that plague women’s metabolic function. I sincerely thank God that I took the time to find her on the Polycystic Ovarian Syndromes Awareness Association website (pcosaa.org) which provides resources in locating a specialist in your area, search this link to find a specialist in Maryland Find A PCOS Specialist here.

Dr. Parambe also informed me of the danger of weight loss surgery and PCOS if the wrong procedure is picked along with putting me on new medications targeted to help me prepare my body for pregnancy; educating me on the outcome of Injecting insulin solely for a PCOS patient who suffers from Insulin Resistance does (makes them gain excessive weight because producing more flawed insulin isn’t solving anything), and further more, why I was gaining weight on my current medication. I felt like finally a doctor cared about my voice, my symptoms, and heard my cry. I needed that to feel ok again and to come up with a plan to win at life. She even broke down my macros and gave me my maximum carb load I could have a day. I left feeling back in control.

I also left with a prescription for Vitamin D, 50,000IUs weekly to be exact to get my body back to functioning optimally. I also left with a renewed understanding on the role deficiencies play, that we take for granted. Although I decided to cut my hair due to the continuous weakening and breakage….I feel empowered and in control. No I didn’t ask for this sort of change, but I welcome it as it serves as me transitioning back to being healthy again.

Hope you guys enjoy this read and as always stay encouraged we got this! We are strong and can beat anything.

With Love,
